What is Eat Book?

Eat Book is an app for iPhone and Android that turns food videos into your personal food library. Share a clip from TikTok or Instagram and Eat Book reads it and files it in the right place: a restaurant gets pinned to your map with the address, hours, rating and the original video attached, and a recipe lands in your recipe book with its ingredients and method laid out ready to cook. Switch between the two with the Restaurants / Recipes tabs.

How do I get the app?

The Eat Book app is free — get it from the App Store on iPhone or Google Play on Android. Sign in with the same account on every device and your map, recipes and shopping list stay in sync.

How does Eat Book read a post? Is it AI?

Yes. When you share a post, AI (Anthropic's Claude) reads its caption — and sometimes its image — to work out which restaurant it's about or to pull out a recipe's ingredients and method. Restaurant details like the address, hours and rating then come from Google's places database, not the AI. Like any AI, it can get things wrong: it might pick the wrong branch of a chain, mis-read a dish, or miss a step — so double-check details that matter, and use the candidate picker or “Add by name” to correct a wrong match. What the AI reads and how it's handled is covered in our Privacy Policy.

How do I add a restaurant?

Three ways, whichever suits the moment:

  • Share a post — in TikTok or Instagram, tap Share and pick Eat Book, or paste the link into “Capture from a post”.
  • Add by name — type a restaurant’s name (and city) and pick it from the list.
  • Find nearby — search a cuisine or dish to see spots around you, and add one in a tap.
I want to add restaurants in another city — one I’m not in.

You don’t have to be anywhere near a place to save it. Three ways, depending on what you already know:

  1. Just name the city — quickest. Open 📌 Add by name, type the restaurant (or a cuisine), and put the city in the City box. The matches appear as pins and the map travels there automatically, so you can see exactly where each one is before you add it.
  2. Point the map yourself — more precise. Turn Near me off, drag and zoom the map to the exact area you care about — a neighbourhood, a stretch of coast, the few blocks around your hotel — then use 🔎 Find nearby, which now reads Find on map, and type a cuisine, a dish or a name.
  3. Let TikTok or Instagram do the choosing. Search there for something like “best restaurants New York” or “Tokyo ramen”, and when a place looks good, share that post straight to Eat Book. It gets pinned in that city exactly as it would at home — no need to be anywhere near it.

Use the first when you already know the name, or the city is enough. Use the second when the city is too big and you want results from one particular part of it — you’re choosing the search area by eye, so it’s as tight as you make it. Use the third when you don’t know where you want to eat yet and would rather let the videos decide — it’s the best way to build a map before a trip.

Whichever you use, you add spots with a tap, exactly as you would at home. Spots you’ve already saved in the area you’re looking at appear below the map under Current Map Location.

How do I save a recipe?

Exactly like a restaurant — the app spots that it’s a recipe and files it in your Recipes tab with the ingredients and method laid out:

  • Share a post — in TikTok or Instagram, tap Share and pick Eat Book, or paste the link into “Capture from a post”.
  • Paste a recipe page — any recipe website or blog link works too.
  • “Recipe in bio”? — Eat Book follows the link in the caption or the creator’s bio and imports the full recipe from there automatically.
Why is my recipe marked “partial”?

Some creators only say the recipe out loud in the video and never write it down anywhere. Eat Book reads captions, on-screen text and linked pages — when none of those hold the full recipe, it saves what it found (title, servings, cuisine) and marks it partial, with a button to watch the original video while you cook. You can always add your own notes to fill in the gaps.

Can I adjust servings or convert units?

Yes — both, right on the recipe:

  • Servings — use the − / + stepper next to Ingredients and every quantity rescales instantly.
  • Convert — tap ⇄ Convert to switch between metric and imperial, for all measurements or just weights or volumes.

While a recipe is open, the app also keeps your screen awake so it doesn’t sleep mid-cook (you can toggle that off in the Method section).

How does the shopping list work?

Open a recipe and tap 🛒 Add to shopping list — the ingredients go onto your shopping list at the serving size and units you’ve set. Tap 🛒 Shopping List in the Recipes tab to check things off as you shop, remove items, or clear the list. It syncs to your account, so a list you build at home is on your phone in the store.

Which apps can I share from?

TikTok, Instagram and Facebook — share a post from any of them and Eat Book reads it the same way, whether it turns out to be a restaurant or a recipe. Links from recipe websites and blogs work too: paste any recipe page and the ingredients and method come across.

The only posts that can’t be read are ones nobody can see — private accounts, or videos that have since been deleted.

It couldn’t find the restaurant — what now?

Usually the caption didn’t name the place, or the venue was only mentioned out loud in the video (Eat Book reads text and images, not audio). Try one of these:

  • Paste the caption text yourself into “Capture from a post”.
  • Add the place by name instead, with the city as a hint.
“Near me” isn’t finding my location.

Eat Book needs location permission. If you tapped “Near me” and nothing happened, check that location is allowed for Eat Book. On Android, the app uses your phone’s default browser’s permission for eatbook.food — open that browser’s site settings, allow location for eatbook.food, then reopen the app. On iPhone, allow location when the app asks.

Do I need an account?

Yes — a free one, and it takes seconds. Sign in with your email (no password — we send a link or a 6-digit code), or with Google on Android and the web. Your account keeps your restaurants, recipes and shopping list synced across all your devices, so nothing is lost if you switch phones.

How does signing in work?

It’s passwordless. Enter your email and we send you a sign-in link plus a 6-digit code — use either, whichever is easier. On Android and the web you can also tap Continue with Google. In the iPhone app, sign-in is by email code.

The sign-in link opened outside the app.

That happens when your phone opens email links somewhere unexpected. Just use the 6-digit code from the same email instead — type it into the sign-in box in the app and you’re straight in.

How do I share with a friend?

Both sides of the app share the same way — tap Share, pick what to send, and you’ll get a short link:

  • Restaurants — share any selection of spots; whoever opens the link adds them to their own map.
  • Recipes — share one from inside a recipe, or a whole batch from the Recipes tab; they land straight in your friend’s recipe book.
How do I sort and filter what I see?

Above the map and above your list there are a few controls that work together:

  • Near me — puts you on the map and orders your list closest-first. Turn it off to explore anywhere else.
  • SortClosest, Recently added, A–Z or Type of food.
  • Show — everything, your newest 20, Want to go, or Favorites.
  • Cuisine — narrow to just Thai, pizza, sushi and so on. The cuisine icons under the map do the same in one tap.

When a filter is on, a ✕ Clear filters button appears on the map to put everything back.

Can I add notes, mark favorites, or remove a spot?

Yes — on any card in your list:

  • 📝 Add note — what to order, who you went with, anything you want to remember.
  • Favorite and Want to go — tag a place, then filter your map down to just those.
  • in the corner of the card removes it from your Eat Book.

Recipes work the same way, with their own note and delete buttons inside the recipe.

Can I turn the sound off?

Yes. The fizzing bubbles that play while Eat Book reads a post are just a progress cue — open the menu and tap 🔊 Sound to switch them off. Your choice is remembered.

Can I use Eat Book on my computer?

Yes — open eatbook.food/app in any browser and sign in with the same account. It’s the same map, recipes and shopping list, just on a bigger screen. Pasting links works there too; sharing straight from TikTok or Instagram is a phone thing.

I shared a post but nothing seems to have happened.

Open Eat Book — in almost every case the post is already there, sitting at the top of your list. If it genuinely didn’t arrive:

  • Check you have a signal — reading a post needs a connection.
  • Copy the link and paste it into Capture from a post instead; it’s the same flow by another door.
  • Private accounts and deleted posts can’t be read by anyone but a follower, so those will fail.
The app seems out of date or a feature is missing.

Eat Book updates itself — there’s usually nothing to install. If something looks stale, fully close the app (swipe it away from the app switcher) and open it again, which fetches the latest version. On the web, reload the page.
